Do not choose slab dimensions from the nominal carport label alone
A “20×20” listing can have roof overhang, a smaller base footprint, posts inset from the roof edge, or an actual exterior dimension that is not exactly 20 feet. Slab planning should use the exact manufacturer's base/post geometry plus whatever apron, drainage or walking area the project needs.

Model-code concrete values are not a slab-design shortcut
The 2024 International Residential Code includes minimum specified compressive strengths for porches, carport slabs, steps and garage floors that vary with weathering exposure. That is useful evidence that climate matters, but it does not tell you the slab thickness, reinforcing, footing geometry or anchor design for a particular carport.
Your state or local jurisdiction may use a different code edition or amendments. Treat model-code tables as context and use the adopted requirements plus the exact structure documentation for the real project.
Know the structure geometry before ordering concrete

Slab planning sequence
- Confirm the vehicle and access envelope with the Size Calculator.
- Select the exact kit or installed configuration.
- Obtain the post/base-rail and anchor/foundation details for that configuration.
- Resolve setbacks, utilities, drainage, frost/soil and local permit requirements.
- Only then finalize slab dimensions, concrete specification, reinforcement and any footings/thickened areas with the appropriate project professional or provider.
This sequence helps avoid one of the most expensive avoidable mistakes: pouring a slab that is beautifully finished but incompatible with the structure that later arrives.

How thick should a concrete slab be for a carport?

Should the slab be the same size as the carport roof?

Can I anchor a carport to an existing slab?
