Three RV dimensions are not interchangeable

Why roof peak is a poor RV-fit shortcut
A carport can have a tall center peak while trusses, eaves or braces create a much lower usable passage. Current manufacturer data illustrates the problem. In CarportFit's researched VersaTube records, a Classic 14×29×12 publishes a ground-to-truss clearance a little above 12 ft while its peak is higher. Canopia's current Alpine family advertises a maximum carport height of 11 ft 7 in but separately describes only 7 ft of overhead clearance in its product copy. Those statements describe different geometry, so CarportFit does not substitute one for the other.
The calculator therefore looks for explicit clear-width/clear-height/coverage fields in CarportFit’s researched product data. If a critical field is unavailable, the product can appear only as a candidate with incomplete dimensional documentation—not as a confirmed dimensional match.
Coverage length is different from exterior and frame length
Roof overhang can make covered length longer than the structural frame, while an overall exterior length can describe geometry without proving that the same distance is usable protected RV coverage. The RV calculator therefore uses a documented usable clear length or roof coverage length for the coverage check. If neither is published, covered length remains unknown; overall exterior length is shown elsewhere as exterior geometry rather than substituted for protected length.

Frequently asked questions
How tall should an RV carport be?
Start with the RV’s actual maximum height including rooftop air conditioners, antennas, vents, solar equipment and other fixed items, then add the overhead clearance you want. Compare that requirement with the lowest documented structural clearance on the travel path, not only roof peak.
Should I measure an RV with the slide-outs open?
If you plan to deploy slide-outs or another side extension while the RV is under the carport, use the total deployed width and add the walking/service clearance you need around it.
Is nominal leg height the same as RV clearance?
Not necessarily. Trusses, rafters, braces, roof slope and post geometry can create a lower limiting clearance. Use an exact manufacturer clearance dimension or drawing.
Why can the calculator return products with incomplete dimensional documentation?
A product may have documented height and length while a dependable clear-width specification is unavailable. CarportFit identifies that documentation limitation and does not classify the product as a complete dimensional match.
Does an RV carport wind or snow rating mean it is approved at my address?
No. A manufacturer-published rating applies only under its documented configuration and installation conditions. Local design loads, permits, foundation and anchoring still need location-specific verification.
