RV Carports: Motorhome Clearance, Size & Buying Guide
An RV carport has to clear the real motorhome, fifth wheel, travel trailer or camper envelope—including rooftop equipment and any deployed width you intend to use under cover. Nominal leg height and roof peak are not substitutes for usable clearance.
Start with the RV's real operating envelope

Width can be as important as height
A narrow RV may fit the travel lane but still leave no room to walk, service components or deploy slides. Conversely, a very wide roof can still have posts or braces that constrain the usable envelope. CarportFit therefore treats overall width, entrance width and usable clear width as separate fields.
For fifth wheels and travel trailers, include the equipment and protrusions that actually remain on the unit when stored. Do not size from a generic “RV class” label.

Size the RV first, then match products
Do not shop from nominal height alone. Carry the actual RV envelope into the Finder and keep any missing clear-width or clear-height evidence visible.
Weather claims need their conditions

Frequently asked questions
How tall should an RV carport be?
Start with the RV’s actual maximum height including rooftop air conditioners, antennas, vents, solar equipment and other fixed items, then add the overhead clearance you want. Compare that requirement with the lowest documented structural clearance on the travel path.
Is a 14-foot-high RV carport guaranteed to clear a 14-foot RV?
No. Nominal or sidewall height is not automatically the minimum usable passage height. Trusses, eaves and braces can create lower clearance, and some published RV products show entrance heights below or different from other height fields.
How wide should an RV carport be?
Use the widest operating condition that matters. If slides or awnings will be used under cover, include the deployed width plus walking or service clearance; otherwise size from the travel width plus the access clearance you want.
Can I compare RV carports by peak height?
No. Peak height can be much higher than the lowest structural member that the RV must pass under. Full-width usable clearance or a dependable entrance/truss dimension is the relevant evidence.
Does an RV carport weather rating prove it meets my local code?
No. Manufacturer ratings apply under documented configuration and anchoring conditions. Local design loads, permits, foundation and engineering requirements still need location-specific verification.
