Estimate a practical clear planning envelope for one, two or three vehicles from real vehicle dimensions plus the access, storage and overhead room you want. The calculator then maps that envelope to a common nominal carport size class without pretending the nominal label equals usable space.

The calculation is deliberately about the space you need to use, not a structural design. For side-by-side vehicles, the clear width equals the vehicle widths plus outer-side clearance, between-vehicle clearance and any storage/work allowance. For tandem parking, the vehicle lengths are added instead. Front, rear and overhead allowances are then added separately.

Manufacturers do not always use a nominal size in the same way. A current Arrow product sold as a 10×15 lists an assembled exterior depth of 13 ft 6 in on its specification table. Canopia's current Oslo 20×40 lists an exterior footprint of about 19 ft 6 in by 39 ft 2 in. VersaTube publishes roof coverage separately from frame length on researched Classic configurations. Those are exactly the kinds of differences that matter when a slab, fence line or vehicle clearance is tight.
For that reason, the calculator may say “20×30 class,” but it does not tell you to pour a 20×30 slab or assume 20×30 feet of clear parking area. Use the class to narrow the market, then verify the exact product drawing, post locations, roof overhang and lowest clearance.

No. The default clearances are CarportFit planning assumptions for comparing size classes, not code, accessibility, fire-separation or permit requirements. Replace them with project-specific values where needed.
Manufacturers may describe roof coverage, frame footprint, nominal length or other dimensions differently. Posts, overhang, braces and roof geometry can reduce or change usable clearance.
Use the widest dimension that matters when entering and using the carport. For many vehicles that means mirror width; also add the door-opening or walking clearance you need after parking.
