A carport foundation is the support and load path beneath the structure. The right choice depends on the exact frame, anchor system, site surface, soil/frost conditions and local requirements—not just the carport size.
Foundation and floor are not the same thing
A carport can have posts or base rails supported by concrete footings or piers while the parking surface is gravel, asphalt or another approved surface. Another design may anchor to a structural slab. A third may use manufacturer-documented ground anchors. Current manuals show why a single foundation rule fails
VersaTube publishes a carport method using concrete piers at anchor locations and notes that hole depth can vary with bearing load, uplift and local frost depth. Canopia publishes different foundation details across its carport families: some products require concrete footings at posts, while other instructions describe concrete fixing or concrete-filled holes depending on the surface.
Those are legitimate manufacturer examples, but they are not a universal design table. A 12-foot kit and a large installed three-car structure can have completely different reactions, support spacing and local engineering requirements.
Wood carports add another foundation detail: heavy timber posts and mounting brackets can define a different base/post grid from the roof overhang. Use the exact manufacturer geometry rather than the nominal roof label.
Choose the structure before finalizing the foundation
If the structure is not selected yet, use the Finder first. Pouring a generic slab or footings before you know the post/base geometry can create expensive conflicts with anchor locations or required dimensions.
Site questions to resolve before construction
- Where are the exact posts, base rails or anchor holes?
- Is the site level enough for the selected system?
- What does the manufacturer require beneath each support?
- What frost depth, soil, drainage or uplift conditions apply locally?
- Will the parking surface and foundation be poured together or treated separately?
- Do utilities, setbacks or drainage paths conflict with excavation?

Does every carport need a concrete slab?
No. Some systems use concrete footings or piers, some can use manufacturer-documented ground anchoring, and some are anchored to a suitable concrete slab. The exact structure and local requirements determine the foundation path.
Can I build a carport on gravel?
The parking surface can be gravel in some projects, but gravel itself is not the structural foundation. Posts or base rails still need the manufacturer-approved or engineered support and anchoring system beneath or through the surface.
